Getting to know your current email configuration is important before connecting your domain to SME Site Builder or any website builder. Because it could potentially prevent your email from working.
Here is a video that explains the process:
If this your first time building a website yourself, congratulations! 🥳 SME Site Builder simplifies this whole process! The one thing that can get a bit confusing is email, since it isn't within our control.
But we are here to help as much as possible. We do have an email migration service which you can enquire about below. Or you can do it yourself by following the instructions below.
You'll need to ask yourself these questions:
- Who runs my email server?
- Do I use outlook, mail.app or any other IMAP or POP3 email clients?
Who runs my email server?
If you know without a doubt that you run a thirdparty business email provider like:
And your DNS is hosted by your domain name provider (e.g. GoDaddy, Name Cheap etc.., where you bought your business domain: yourbusinessname.com) then you can safely skip this this article, as your email will remain as is when you connect your domain. If you are not 100% sure though, keep reading.
If your email is hosted by the same host as your existing website (common with Wordpress websites), then when you connect the domain your email will stop working! 🛑
To prevent this, the following steps should be followed:
- Determine who hosts your email server with this DNS Lookup tool: Misk
- Sign up for third party email provider (above)
- Migrate email across (email provider specific)
- Connect IMAP or POP3 clients like outlook and mail.app (optional)
